The Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority (ESERA) is proud to host the Regional Energy Regulators Association of Southern Africa (RERA), for their bi-annual meetings of the portfolio committees and sub-committees of the member countries. The meetings were hosted for the better part of September and October. RERA member countries include Eswatini, South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Tanzania, Zambia, Namibia, Angola, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique and Mauritius.
The Authority hosted the first part of the meetings in September 2022. They included different subcommittee meetings deliberating on technical regulation electricity, technical regulation oil and gas, economic regulation, legal and legislative matters and the human resource matters within the SADC energy regulation industry. The second part of the meetings were hosted in October and included portfolio committee meetings.
The RERA meetings are a key driver in facilitating the development of a regional energy market that is efficient, integrated, harmonized, sustainable and investment friendly in the SADC region. Furthermore, the discussions and decisions made promote universal access to modern, clean, reliable, quality and affordable energy services in the region. As such, discussions in the meetings emphasized the crucial role that regulators should play in ensuring a sufficient supply of affordable energy, high quality of supply and high quality of service. This platform ensures the accountability of each member country’s energy industry to the SADC region’s requirements and standards.

ESERA actively participates in the portfolio committees and sub-committees on behalf of the Kingdom of Eswatini. This platform has greatly contributed towards the growth of the country’s electricity supply industry over the years, and this year, the Authority was happy to participate in the committees of both the electricity and petroleum industries.
RERA is a formal Association of Energy Regulators in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region. The SADC Ministers responsible for Energy established RERA, initially focusing on electricity regulation only, on 12 July 2002 at their meeting held in Maseru, Lesotho. The Association was officially launched in Windhoek, Namibia on 26 September 2002. RERA’s mandate was expanded from electricity to energy regulation in 2019.
